The Harry Cowan Company (HCC) and DeVries Real Estate story
HCC (The Harry Cowan Company) was established in 1950 by Harry Cowan of Long Beach. In 1960 the company was taken over by Leo Schochet who became one of southern California’s most prominent and successful tenant representative specialists, finding hundreds of locations for Radio Shack, Chief Auto Parts, Burger King, and Zody’s Department Store. From there Leo expanded into retail property management, sales and leasing. In recent years HCC has also added residential sales as well as retail business management. Today, Michael Schochet and his associates (Alexis DeVries, Wendy Schochet, Shannon Williams, Maya Ray) are intent on continuing the tradition and success of HCC Real Estate.
Michael E. Schochet graduated from University of California in 1989. After a year in mortgage banking, he began his real estate career with Centers Business Management and La Mancha Development. Within the first year he became the property manager for all Orange County shopping centers and was named Property Manager of the Year. After 2 years he went to work for the Harry Cowan Company, becoming Vice President in 2000 and President and Owner in 2020.
Mike has spent the last 30 years specializing in commercial shopping centers, covering sales, property management, leasing, and tenant representation. As a tenant representative, he worked with Papa John’s Pizza during the 2000s opening up over 15 locations in Los Angeles Country. Mike has also represented or negotiated leases for Carl’s Jr., Jack in the Box, Federal Express, Domino’s Pizza, Bruster’s Ice Cream, Supercuts, 7-Eleven, Charo’s Chicken, as well as dozens of local tenants of nearly every type of retail and industrial use. He has managed shopping centers and office buildings in Lakewood, Long Beach, Beverly Hills, Huntington Beach, Lake Forest, and as far out as Bakersfield and Blythe. Mike’s wise knowledge and expertise are rooted in customer service and tenant relations.
Harry Cowan Company (HCC) was established in 1950 in Long Beach by Harry L.Cowan on Pine Avenue as a local commercial real estate company. During the 1960s Leo Schochet took over the company and HCC became the tenant representative for Radio Shack and Chief Auto Parts all throughout Southern California, helping both companies open up over 100 locations. In 1972 the company relocated to Lakewood on the corner of South Street and Lakewood Blvd, where it has remained ever since. During the last several decades HCC expanded to become specialists in all facets of property management under the leadership of Leo Schochet and his son, Michael. Following the death of Leo in early 2020, Michael became President and Owner.
In late 2020 Michael hired Alexis DeVries of DeVries Real Estate, a specialist in residential sales, in order to expand the company to include home services as well. Now HCC and DeVries Real Estate provide all aspects of real estate expertise, both residential real estate and commercial sales and leasing.
Alexis DeVries has a Bachelors degree in Finance, Real Estate & Law from California State University, Long Beach. She has spent the last nearly 20 years working in all aspects of the real estate industry, including finance, management, residential, and, most prominently in recent years, all aspects of commercial real estate.
Alexis specializes in retail commercial leasing and tenant representation. She has negotiated leases with major chain tenants such as Jack In the Box and Federal Express, as well as numerous “mom and pop” type tenants such as nail salons, dentists, home décor, donuts, hair salons, and the YMCA. She is currently the southern California tenant representative for Mogee Te, one of the largest boba and tea shop chains in the world with over 300 locations. Alexis has also brokered the sale of several commercial shopping centers and is a property management specialist as well.
Shannon Williams grew up in Riverside, CA and now resides in Westminster, CA with her husband and 2 daughters. Shannon holds a Bachelor of Science degree from West Coast University. She is extremely passionate about serving local diverse communities, and continuously looks for ways to help people secure a future through home ownership. Shannon’s personal commitment to helping people on every level shows in her professional Real Estate assistant role. She holds high levels of customer service skills within her attention to detail, follow-up, and friendly support throughout the entire real estate process.
Wendy Schochet began her connection with HCC back in 1992. She has served as both office manager and artistic director for both HCC and DeVries Real Estate, overseeing our advertising and social media, which is especially important when it comes to marketing tenants and leasable properties.
Maya Ray is the Finance Executive for HCC. With over 24 years in finance, Maya handles all aspects of banking, tax accounting, and property management for 4 shopping centers, including over 50 tenants, as well as over a dozen private retail businesses and corporations related to HCC.
